Our Vision

Great Northern enacts its vision through a trusting and collaborative culture that helps us be at our best every day. Our vision reflects the foundation of core values—Integrity, Personal Growth, Entrepreneurial Spirit and a Shared Future—that our founders, Jim Davis, Bob Brown and Robert Maring used to launch Great Northern in 1962. Our success has always depended upon our people, now over 1,400 teammates at 14 locations, who think and work together, regardless of their job.

Safety Programs and Performance

Great Northern is committed to protecting the safety and health of our team members, as well as protecting the environment in which we operate. We will achieve this through complying with all applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, as well as establishing policies and procedures to assist our facility management in injury reduction, energy reduction and pollution prevention.

We emphasize continuous improvement, making every effort to eliminate conditions and practices that have the potential to cause injuries or an impact on the environment. We require our leadership teams at each location to ensure facilities comply with all related laws and regulations set forth in the Corporate Safety Manual. We train team members on their role in the program, and we set annual goals to provide our team members with a workplace free of recognized hazards.

We maintain modern, clean, well-lit, drug-free and tobacco-free, OSHA-compliant working environments with state-of-the-art, safe and well maintained equipment.

Health and Wellness

Great Northern is dedicated to educating, motivating and empowering its team members to make healthy lifestyle choices that improve their overall quality of life.

Well-being involves an increased level of mental understanding and body awareness, a need to make a commitment to take the steps necessary for effective and healthy lifestyle changes, and embracing the motivation and support needed to achieve and maintain healthy lifestyle outcomes.

To that end, Great Northern offers many tools and resources to benefit and support team members so they can reach their lifestyle goals, including annual health risk screenings, and an on-site health coach to provide advice, tools, and support to help team members raise their Health Risk Assessment scores.

We also offer preventative health insurance benefits, annual wellness initiatives and periodic wellness challenges, health fitness reimbursement and a culture of support for making good lifestyle choices. Our locations independently offer a range of initiatives, including walking clubs, healthy holiday programs, cumulative miles or weigh-ins.

On site and near-site clinics, as well as ongoing team member engagement around health and wellness, has kept health care spending in control in 2020 as an outcome of keeping our teammates healthy.

Corporate Giving/Volunteerism

Through our Great Northern Cares Program, we encourage each of our locations to connect with community causes, and we annually provide corporate funding to support their efforts. Across our locations, our team members dedicate their time to support more than 100 local organizations. The generous spirit of our team members is evidenced by countless stories of shared time and energy to care for those in need or to support a healthy lifestyle.
